City police have charged 23 people following a crackdown on property-related crimes in the city’s northeast.

Between June 24 and July 24, officers increased patrols in areas of northeast Calgary that had recently experienced a spike in property crime rates.

Officers were able to make arrests while offenders were in the process of committing the crimes.

As a result, police recovered a number of items including vehicles, a mountain bike and tools. Police also seized small amounts of heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine.

Police arrested 23 people who are facing more than 46 charges, including possession of stolen property under $5,000, theft under $5,000, fraud under $5,000, property damage over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle, shop break and enter, possession of break-and-enter instruments, flight from a police officer, possession of cannabis, breach of conditions, obstructing a police officer, and driving while disqualified.

Investigators say stolen vehicles are often used to commit other more serious crimes. Calgarians are urged to keep their vehicles, garage and house doors locked, and not to leave their vehicles unattended with the keys inside.

Spare keys should be kept in a secure location away from the vehicle and garage door openers should not be left in the vehicle.
