The province’s health authority is putting a former pediatrics professor from Edmonton in charge of the $13.9-billion-a-year organization.

Linda Hughes, chair of the recently-appointed board at Alberta Health Services, announced today that Dr. Verna Yiu will take over as interim president and chief executive starting in January.

Yiu, who is currently the vice-president of quality and chief medical officer at the authority, will replace Vickie Kaminski, who announced last month she was resigning the $540,000-a-year position for personal reasons after just 18 months on the job.

“(Yiu) will provide leadership and stability and will work with the board to continue to ensure high-quality health care delivery and innovation across the province,” Hughes said in a prepared statement.

Prior to joining AHS in 2012, Yiu spent over a decade as an administrator with the University of Alberta’s faculty of medicine and dentistry.

She will be the seventh person at the helm of AHS in the last six years.
