No one was injured when a fire broke out in the basement of a northwest duplex on Sunday evening.

Crews were called to a home in Rosemont around 6:20 p.m. and arrived to find “grey smoke venting from the front door,” according to Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk.

Cherweniuk said firefighters entered the suite in the 2800 block of 14th Street N.W. and found a working fire in the basement, which was undergoing some sort of renovations.

No one was home when the fire broke out in the duplex, though a man and his dog in the neighbouring suite were home and left the house as a precaution.

The fire significantly damaged one side of the duplex, said Cherweniuk.

The blaze affected traffic in the area, and officials closed the northbound lanes of 14th Street as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

At 7:30 p.m., the road remained closed.
