A day removed from weather that pelted the city with hail and caused flooding in some areas, Calgary could face further severe weather today.
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the city and its surrounding area.
The agency said in its alert that conditions this afternoon will be “favourable for the development of sever thunderstorms,” which could produce hail “the size of loonies, wind gusts to 100 km/h and rainfall amounts to 75 millimetres.”
The other areas currently covered by the storm watch are:
– Airdrie-Cochrane-Olds-Sundre
– Brooks-Strathmore-Vulcan
– Drumheller-Three Hills
– Kananaskis-Canmore
– Okotoks-High River-Claresholm
Environment Canada says the watch may be extended southward and eastward later in the day.
Tuesday’s storm hit Calgary around 5 p.m., turning many communities white with hail and flooding several roads.
Quarter-sized hail fell on the city, power outages were reported in several neighbourhoods and multiple roads were closed, including some closures into this morning.
Winds of 50 km/h, with gusts up to 78 km/h, were recorded in Calgary, said Environment Canada.
