A Canmore accountant is facing new charges in connection with a fraud scheme in which 40 people lost approximately $5.5 million.

Police have charged James Russell Neilson, 49, of Abaca Solutions, with fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document, and laundering proceeds of crime.

Neilson was released following a bail hearing and is expected to appear in court on Feb. 17.

The charges stem from incidents that allegedly took place between January 2009 and October 2014, according to Mounties.

RCMP say Neilson was previously charged in May with similar offences in connection with a $1-million scheme, after several individuals and businesses complained to police about investments they had made with the accountant and his company.

In that case, following a six-month investigation, Neilson was charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000, one count of theft over $5,000, and one count of laundering the proceeds of crime.
