Two ATVs were destroyed after a detached garage went up in flames in southeast Calgary on Saturday morning.

The fire department believes the owner was trying to “thaw” the vehicles when the fire erupted in the back alley of 500 block of 10th Street S.E. shortly after 10 a.m.

When crews arrived, they witnessed heavy flames and smoke coming from the building, which was unoccupied at the time.

“I think they were trying to thaw the ATVS out in the garage,” said acting district chief Hank Ormstrup, although he couldn’t elaborate further.

According to the fire department, because of the large flames inside the garage, crews decided to douse flames from the outside.

Other than some slight damage to the neighbouring garage, the fire was quickly brought under control and most of the damage was confined to the building of origin.

“There was a little bit of difficulty with access immediately. They were able to knock the fire down quickly,” Ormstrup said.

No one was hurt.

The official cause remains under investigation.
