The RCMP’s newest recruits will be furry, full of energy and ready for training.
And their handlers are once again turning to young Canadians for help in giving them names.
Staff at the Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC) in Innisfail are holding a contest to find names for their future police dogs – 13 German Shepherd puppies – that will be born at the centre later this year.
“The Name the Puppy Contest is an exciting time for everyone at PDSTC,” Insp. Akrum Ghadban, officer in charge of the centre, said in a statement.
“I am certainly looking forward to seeing all the creative contest entries from across Canada.”

The RCMP are asking Canadian residents 14 years or younger to help name 13 German Shepherd puppies, that will be born at the Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail in 2016. This contest has been going on for several years and has helped name current working dogs like Ephriam (pictured).
The puppy naming contest is open to Canadian residents 14 years or younger, and is limited to one entry each.
The name must be for a male or female puppy, start with the letter J, have no more than nine letters and be either one or two syllables long.
Children are encouraged to come up with “original and imaginative” names that are appropriate for working police dogs, not pets.
Kids have until March 22 to enter, and names will be chosen by the centre’s staff. If there are multiple submissions of the same winning puppy name, staff will do a draw to choose the winner.
The winners and prizes will be announced April 26.
