Eric Torsher was in his Beltline apartment Thursday afternoon when he heard four or five gunshots.

After a pause, he heard a couple more.

Torsher, who has emergency medical training, raced downstairs to the street to see if anyone needed medical assistance.

“I got some gloves and came down, but there was no one around,” he said. “I took a look before the cops got here; there was no blood or anything; just a bit of broken glass.”

Police responded to the scene near the corner of 12 Avenue and 11 Street S.W. just before 5 p.m. for reports of shots fired.

There were no reports of injuries.

With no offender at the scene, police began interviewing witnesses.

“People were saying there were shots fired and it was coming from lots of people,” duty inspector Joel Matthews said. “With no victim there and no offender, we’re just relying on what witnesses are telling us, and we’re just sorting that out.”

Police have no descriptions of any suspects.

Several blocks from the scene, police cordoned off a grey Ford sedan that was parked behind an apartment building in the area of 15 Avenue and 11 Street S.W.

Police confirmed they were holding the scene of a vehicle as part of their investigation into the Beltline incident. Police could be seen removing paperwork from the back seat of the car.

“We’re maintaining the vehicle for now,” Sgt. Kelly Todd said. “We’re still investigating as to what exactly happened.”

Michael Hrnciar said he was sleeping at his nearby apartment when he heard five or six gunshots. He walked to his window and saw a grey car with a broken rear window driving away. Nobody else could be seen fleeing, he said.

Police blocked off 11 Street between 12 and 13 Avenues with yellow tape. Evidence markers dotted the pavement.

Torsher said when the shooting occurred, there was some foot traffic, but “there was no one running in any particular direction.”

“Then cop cars came flying down here,” he said.

“It was surprising.”
