Two residents and their dog escaped unscathed from their northeast home after a two-alarm fire erupted Saturday morning.

Fire crews were called around 5:20 a.m. to Saddlemont Crescent N.E. in the community of Saddle Ridge to respond to reports of a house fire.

When they arrived, they witnessed a large volume of smoke and flames coming from the residence and called a second alarm response, bringing more resources to the scene.

The two adult occupants were roused from sleep by the smell of smoke and fled with their pet dog. No one was injured.

“It’s difficult to tell where it started,” said battalion chief Stu Laird. “The fire had already breached the exterior walls when we arrived.”

Crews set up an elevated water tower from an aerial ladder truck to douse the fire from above and protect neighbouring buildings.

Once firefighters knocked down most of the flames on the outside, they were able to move into the home and fight the blaze from within, as well as conduct searches.

Two adjacent homes were briefly evacuated for precautionary reasons, but the residents were allowed to return home a short time later.

City police officers, AHS, ATCO Gas and Enmax workers were also called to help out at the scene.

Crews managed to contain the fire to where it started, but the home sustained extensive structural damage and residents likely won’t be able to return for several days. The detached garage behind the home also sustained a bit of heat damage, Laird said.

Firefighters remain at the scene searching for hot spots. The cause remains under investigation and there is no damage estimate available at this time.

Laird said it’s unknown whether there were working smoke alarms in the home.
