City police continue investigating two pedestrian collisions Thursday, including one that killed a woman and another that sent a boy to hospital in critical condition.
Police say a woman who was struck in a collision in Forest Lawn on Thursday night later died of her injuries.
It’s believed around 10:15 p.m., the 67-year-old pedestrian was walking south across 8th Avenue from the northwest corner of 47th Street S.E. when she was struck by a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica heading east on 8th Avenue approaching 47th Street S.E.
She was taken to hospital in serious condition but died of her injuries Friday morning.
The driver remained at the scene and was interviewed by police.
It’s believed the overhead pedestrian crossing lights were activated at the time of the crash, and police are still working to determine whether the woman was inside or near the crosswalk.
Meanwhile, officers continue investigating a crash in the southeast community of Cranston on Thursday evening that sent an eight-year-old boy to hospital in critical condition.
Police say a 2015 Nissan Frontier truck was heading north on Cranford Drive S.E. nearing Cranston Gate S.E. around 5 p.m. when two children crossed the road in front of the truck near an unmarked crosswalk in front of the truck.
The 27-year-old driver of the truck tried to brake but was unable to stop in time and struck one of the children.
She remained at the scene and spoke with police.
The boy was taken to South Health Campus with severe head and brain injuries. He was later flown by STARS air ambulance to the Alberta Children’s Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Neighbours at the scene complained that the intersection is in dire need of a crosswalk and they often see drivers speeding through the area. Some have even called 311 to voice their traffic-related concerns.
Police say neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in either collision. They continue to investigate both crashes and are urging witnesses to come forward
