The University of Calgary has been recognized as one of only two Canadian Universities on an annual list of businesses and institutions in Canada committed to sustainability.

It’s the third year in a row the U of C has been named one of the top 10 organizations by the Corporate Knights in the Future 40 Responsible Corporate Leaders rankings.

The rankings judge businesses and institutions based on 12 key performance indicators, including energy use, GHG emissions, water use, waste production, employee turnover, safety performance and leadership diversity.

In a news release, Joanne Perdue, chief sustainability officer at the University of Calgary, welcomed the ranking.

“This Corporate Knights ranking provides strong validation that the University of Calgary is succeeding in its goal to become a post-secondary leader in sustainability in Canada,” she said.

“We are delighted to have attained this recognition. It is a tribute to the contributions across our campus community to advance our commitment to leadership and excellence in sustainability.”

This year, the University of Calgary is ranked eighth overall on the list. The only other university on the list — York University in Toronto — came in at No. 22.
