Police are looking for an Airdrie woman who may have information about the homicide of a Lethbridge grandmother in January.

Irene Carter was found dead by family members on the afternoon of Jan. 17 at her Lethbridge home in the 300 block of Normandy Road S. An autopsy revealed the 78-year-old woman had died of stab wounds.

No motive has been released.

Officers are now looking for a woman named Terri Lynn or Terri with the last initial L, who may be able to help with the investigation.

“She is not a suspect at this time. She’s simply a person that may have information that may progress our case forward,” Sgt. Ryan Stef, with the Lethbridge Regional Police Service, told reporters Wednesday.

The person of interest is described as an Airdrie woman in her late 20s or early 30s, five-foot-four or five-foot-five, around 250 pounds, heavy set, with dirty blond hair and brown streaks, and a tattoo on one of her wrists. She may own a fuchsia-coloured winter jacket with a black collar.

Sgt. Ryan Stef of the Lethbridge Police Service Violent Crimes Unit stands with a pink jacket while speaking with media at the Calgary Police Service headquarters in Calgary, Alta., on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. Lethbridge police are looking to speak with a person of interest in the Irene Carter homicide case. The woman may have this jacket.

It’s also believed she may have attended Gamblers Anonymous groups in Calgary.

“For the public, I think it may help in understanding who that person is. Somebody within those groups may also know who she is,” Stef said.

He would not comment on how this woman is linked to Carter or whether she was in Lethbridge at the time of the homicide, only to say her name came up during witness interviews over the past few days, and police have not been able to locate her.

At the last news conference on this case earlier this month, Stef told reporters police were looking for door-to-door canvassers who may have been in the area at the time of Carter’s slaying. After exhausting that part of the investigation in speaking with Lethbridge companies, police expanded their search into Calgary.

He said police did speak with contractor companies in Calgary and did receive some tips.

Stef said police continue searching for suspects and urged anyone with information to come forward.
