City police have taken a man into custody after a taxi driver was threatened and carjacked in southeast Calgary early Friday.

Police were notified around 2:30 a.m. of a taxi that was stolen from 21st Avenue and 46th Street S.E. in the Forest Lawn area. A weapon was produced during the carjacking.

Det. Hayley Marquis said the driver was not injured and the vehicle was later recovered on 52nd Street S.E.

The canine unit and patrol members located and arrested a suspect about half an hour later.

Investigators are now interviewing the man. Charges are pending.

Marquis said police are looking into whether this incident is linked to similar cases last week.

Officers were first called around 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 14 to the community of Pineridge to respond to an attempted robbery on a taxi driver at 59th Street and 22nd Avenue N.E.

A male passenger armed with a knife demanded money but fled empty-handed when the driver refused to comply.

Hours later, around 1 a.m., police were called to Forest Lawn after a taxi driver was robbed of cash and carjacked in the 2000 block of 47th Street S.E.

The cab was later recovered in the 5000 block of Hubalta Road S.E.

No injuries were reported in either case.
