Divers located the body of a 12-year-old Calgary boy in a Nova Scotia river on Monday morning after the boy disappeared while swimming on Sunday afternoon.

The 12-year-old boy was on vacation and swimming in the LaHave River with three other youths when he went under the water and did not resurface around 12:45 p.m. Sunday.

Divers from the Nova Scotia RCMP and New Brunswick RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, alongside search and rescue teams, the Canadian Coast Guard, fire officials and paramedics launched a massive search for the boy.

His body was recovered around 8:30 a.m. Monday, close to the spot he was last seen.

The Lunenburg County District RCMP issued a news release thanking everyone who helped with the search and expressing condolences to the boy’s family.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy during this extremely difficult time,” RCMP said.
