Johnston’s Canyon, a popular tourist area in Banff National Park, closes Tuesday to improve public safety along the trail.

The trail, which is about 22 kilometres west of Banff on the Bow Valley Parkway, will be closed from the day use area to the upper falls.

The rehabilitation comes after a 12-year-old boy suffered extensive trauma this summer when a tree along the trail fell and hit him. The trail was immediately closed and 20 trees were removed.

This fall’s more extensive restoration work will include rock-scaling, trim-blasting, rock-bolting, asphalt removal and disposal, cold-patching, tree and deadfall removal, retaining wall construction, rock wall construction and installation of new metal railings.

It will cost about $1.2 million to fix Johnston Canyon trail. Another $1.9 million is being spent on the Johnston Canyon day use area parking lot.
