Historic Calgary Week: Daily events for Wednesday, July 29

If you like to start your day with a walk in nature, head over to Bowness Park at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Micelle Reid, a conservation landscape architect, will explain how the historic park will be redeveloped while retaining historic features. The park was damaged in the 2013 floods and will fully reopen this fall.

Meet at the park, 8900 48 Ave N.W. by the east end of the lagoon and wear your walking shoes.

If you prefer to look at archives and artifacts in the morning, you would have had to pre-register on Tuesday to visit the City’s archives as they open non-records boxes and discover what artifacts are inside.

Firefighting fans can learn about the history of the Calgary Fire Brigade on the anniversary of Fire Chief James “Cappy” Smart’s funeral. Smart served as fire chief from 1898 to 1933. Meet at the entrance to the Union Cemetery at Spiller Rd. and Cemetery Rd. S.E. at 10 a.m.

Join amateur historian Gord Tolton at the Central United Church, 131 7 Ave. S.E. at noon as he tells the story of John J. Healy, a “frontier adventurer and buccaneer capitalist” from the late-nineteenth century west.

Join Lady Isabella Lougheed, Nellie McClung and Mary Scot Widner for tea at Lougheed House, 707 13 Ave. S.W., for tea at 2 p.m. and listen as they share stories about living in Calgary. The ladies are played by Karen Gummo, Mary Hays and Betty Hersberger.

Learn how to search a database of Jewish veterans from WWI and WWII who were from southern Alberta. There are almost 500 entries in the database, which have biographical and service information. Meet at the main atrium of the Military Museums, 4500 Crowchild Trail S.W. at 2:30 p.m.

Take in an evening concert from Phyllis Wheaton, Tom Poole and Craig James as they celebrate Forest Lawn with stories and songs. Meet at artBOX, 1807 42 St. S.E. for 7 p.m.
