Calgary police say a man was forced into a vehicle against his will after an altercation between two groups of people on Stephen Avenue Wednesday night.

They’re now asking for public assistance in identifying the man who was potentially abducted.

At around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, a blue Dodge Calibre and a grey Chevy Cruze stopped near the intersection of Stephen Avenue and 1st Street S.W. The men from the two vehicles got out of their cars and approached a group of individuals standing on the sidewalk. A short altercation occurred and one man was forced into the Chevrolet Cruze against his will.

“It’s quite clear that there’s a struggle and an altercation,” said Acting Insp. Rob Davidson.

Investigators are stumped.

“What we don’t have is anything other than a video, other than a single call to us,” he continued. “We don’t know what the motivations are, we don’t know who is involved.”

The whole altercation was captured on video by a nearby camera in a taxi.

In the video, the people standing on the sidewalk with the man who was taken appear to flee during the incident. They haven’t contacted police, Davidson said.

“It’s very concerning,” he said. “Although it’s hard to see, it does look like those people ran away.”

“If they came forward, they would have information for that would help us identify who was forced into the vehicle.”

Anyone with who witnessed the altercation or knows the identity of the man forced into the car is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

“We really want to speak to them and make sure that they’re safe,” Davidson said.
